Nathan’s Story
“What’s unique about the dining hall at camp is the diversity of stories that it has been host to over the years. From mealtime, to theme, to wide games, to even times of worship and bible study, the dining hall has been the hub of so much activity and so many memories. In fact my very first significant memory of Pioneer Camp took place in the Boys’ Camp dining hall. I was 14 years old and was coming to camp for the first time and didn’t know a single person. I remember sitting at one of the back tables for one of the first meals, trying to remain discrete as a shy kid, with really just myself and another guy. As we sat there awkwardly in silence a counsellor came and sat beside us and just started to engage us in conversation. That session myself and the other boy ended up sitting at that very same table for basically every meal, and you know who else did, this counsellor. He ‘saw’ us even when it would have been easy to let us slip through the cracks and went out of his way to spend time with us and encourage us to really engage with what God may have had for us that week.”
