Dubya’s Story

“One of my first memories of the Boys Camp dining hall is from when I was a 15 year old Voyageur camper in Oats’ cabin. On the night of Visitor’s Sunday, when we were supposed to be asleep, my chalet-mate Steve and I heard Oats leave the chalet, along with his good friend Jose, and head in the direction of the dining hall. After a few minutes of back ‘n forth about what they could possibly be doing, Steve and I had no choice but to find out for ourselves. As we moved through the Rangers section, we started to hear a low rumble. And as we arrived to the Voyageur steps of the dining hall, the rumble had grown to a level of epic Boys Camp proportions. We climbed the stairs and peered in the window, only to see Oats, shirt off and sweaty, being body slammed by Chandler — shirt off, sweaty, and significantly hairier (I might be misremembering who this second person was, although the description certainly fits). They were surrounded by a ring of tipped-over tables and the rest of the Boys Camp staff — shirts off — standing around cheering and heckling. This was the moment that the dream of becoming a Boys Camp staff reached its pinnacle in my imagination.”
